Transition from structure-borne sound to airborne sound

Transfer path analysis for optimization of acoustic properties

How do you subsequently influence the acoustics of a product, especially when essential components in the design can no longer be changed? You can get answers with a transfer path analysis. Here, sound is broken down into fields of action that you can influence in a targeted manner.

Structure-borne sound path

Sound transmitted or generated by component vibrations can be eliminated, for example, by decoupling. The challenge is to ensure the firm mounting and safety of the decoupled modules. If possible, we first measure the sound generation on the real components. Subsequently, we develop solution approaches by calculating and evaluating variants.

Airborne sound path

Sound transmitted through the air is contained, for example, by means of acoustically effective enclosures (encapsulation). It is not enough to simply build an arbitrary enclosure around the component. A large number of parameters must be taken into account and adapted to the scenario so that an enclosure provides acoustically effective attenuation.

Story: Quiet coffee machines

How can the acoustics of a product be influenced retrospectively if essential components and parts in the design can no longer be changed? Novicos provided the answer for the fully automatic coffee machine division at Miele. Our team disassembled and analyzed the machine, performed a transfer path analysis and calculated various possible solutions. Subsequently, Novicos built a physical prototype to prove the correctness of the calculations.

Sound characteristic

Optimization of the perceived sound quality

Sound is not just sound. We analyze sound characteristics to better understand the acoustic properties of sound sources and effective environments. This knowledge enables tailored optimization measures for comfort as well as human perception of sound. Depending on the application, we take the following aspects into account:

  • Sound source characteristics (frequency, amplitude, spectral composition)

  • Sound propagation characteristics (sound velocity, sound pressure, directional effect)

  • Room acoustic characteristics (room acoustics, reverberation time, sound absorption and reflection)

Total sound pressure level

Prediction of sound pressure as a basis for decision-making

The total sound pressure level is a value for evaluating and comparing operating noise levels. The higher the management level or the more inhomogeneous the team, the more relevant it becomes. This value is also relevant for the certification of products for compliance with legal guidelines and standards. We design measurements in such a way that the collected data provide a maximally helpful basis for decisions on how to proceed. We are happy to provide professional support for your project and deliver solution approaches and concepts to achieve your goals. If desired, we will also orient ourselves to legal standards. For pure DIN/ISO certification of end products without optimization requirements, we will gladly refer you to a partner with a correspondingly standardized process.

Insulation materials

Should the containment of a noise source be more economical or more sensible than its elimination, we offer you comprehensive advice on the optimal use of insulation materials. Novicos advises you on the selection of materials, the design as well as the integration of insulation materials. We perform acoustic measurements, calculate solutions and make predictions on the effectiveness of the insulation. Specifically, we support you as follows:

  • Sound passage

Measurement of the transmission loss (TL) in the reverberation chamber with subsequent calculation of relevant values for sound transmission.

  • Absorption

Acoustic characterization by measuring the absorption in the impedance tube. Project example: Aerogels

  • Reflection

We determine the proportion of reflected sound on insulation materials by measuring it in an impedance tube or a calculation model.

Measurement and simulation

Our answer for decision security

Since our foundation, we have pursued the concept of intelligently combining measurement and simulation. When we intelligently integrate measurements and simulation, additional value is added to the significance of the results.

Realistic data for simulations

By measuring forces and vibrations, for example, we provide precise and realistic data that can serve as the basis for simulations. This is particularly well suited for acoustic optimizations on existing products.

Verification of simulation results

Through measurements, we test the accuracy of a method for the respective application. Here, we first benchmark the results of a simplified form against a comparable measurement. If the results are valid, we use the model for more complex problems that cannot be easily validated by measurement.

Time/cost efficiency

If an existing product can be measured, real measurement data for simulation models are not only more precise, but also more efficient to collect. When we develop solution variants via simulation, we use real measurement data as the basis for these calculations.

Interdisciplinary work

Multiphysical concepts and simulations

We record the influencing factors across disciplines and create multiphysical concepts. Our team consists of experts in acoustics, vibration, strength, flow, kinetics and electromagnetics. This enables us to penetrate even the most unusual application cases. We work particularly frequently on NVH projects.
