Reduction of flow-induced sound

With our help, you effectively reduce the sound radiation of your products. Here, we follow a structured approach based on scientific methodology and best-practice solutions:

  • Prediction through digital twin 

    We create a digital twin of your product to accurately predict flow acoustics and gain insight into potential acoustic issues.

  • Construction of simulation models

    We develop detailed simulation models to investigate the interactions between flows and acoustic phenomena. This allows us to perform precise analyses and develop targeted solutions.

  • Optimization / Troubleshooting

    In the case of unexpected noises, we find the underlying causes and develop solutions. We work for you both in the development phase and on the finished (series) product. 

Measurement and simulation

Our answer for decision security

Since our foundation, we have pursued the concept of intelligently combining measurement and simulation. If desired, we verify CFD simulation results by real measurements. When we intelligently combine measurements and simulation in both directions, additional value is added to the validity of the results.

Realistic data for simulations

By measuring forces and vibrations, for example, we provide precise and realistic data that can serve as the basis for simulations.

Verification of simulation results

Through measurements, we validate simulation results and test the accuracy of a method for the respective application. First, we benchmark the results of a calculation against a comparable real measurement. This creates confidence for more demanding or complex problems that cannot be easily validated by measurement.

Time/cost efficiency

If an existing product can be measured, real measurement data for simulation models is not only more precise, but also more efficient to collect.

Numerical acoustics for turbocharger noise

Project report

As sound sources in automobiles are continuously decreasing, other sound generators, such as flow noise in turbochargers, are becoming more prominent. Novicos developed a pragmatic modeling methodology for predicting the sound field using a turbocharger from BorgWarner as an example.

With our team from the fields of acoustics, vibration, strength, flow, kinetics and electromagnetics, we are able to penetrate even the most unusual application cases. Fluid-structure interaction

We are service provider for fluid-structure interaction

Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) describes the interaction between solid structures and surrounding fluids, such as air or water, in which mutual influences occur. In technical applications, FSI phenomena are often crucial for the performance, reliability and durability of systems, such as aircraft wings, bridges, wind turbines or underwater vehicles. 

Overall, the computation of fluid-structure interaction requires a deep understanding of fluid and solid mechanics as well as numerical methods to solve complex coupled problems. Novicos is able to calculate FSI problems.

The calculation is a complex process with several steps:

Flow simulation (CFD)

The flow around the solid structure is calculated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). CFD is a numerical method for solving equations that describe the behavior of fluids under various conditions.

Structural analysis (FEA)

The solid structure is analyzed using finite element analysis (FEA) to determine the stresses, deformations, and vibrations that occur under the action of forces, such as the flow forces acting on the structure.

Coupling of CFD and FEA 

The coupling between the two analyses (CFD and FEA) forms the core of the FSI calculation. The flow forces from the CFD analysis are transferred to the structure and considered as external loads in the FEA. At the same time, the deformations of the structure influence the surrounding flow, which in turn changes the flow forces. This reciprocal process is repeated until a state of equilibrium is reached and the solutions hardly change in successive iterations.

Software integration

Specialized software packages that integrate both CFD and FEA methods are used for FSI calculations. These software solutions enable an efficient and precise analysis of the fluid-structure interaction.

Methods

Our calculation know-how 

Based on the complexity of the problem, we use a wide variety of methods to predict the flow sound. For example, analytical methods, integral methods and fully discretized simulation models are used. For the most efficient calculation, special solutions are often necessary, which we provide by developing our own methods.

As a science-oriented SME, we are involved in various research projects in aeroacoustics and flow acoustics. We enrich flow acoustics with the development of methods and the expansion of knowledge about physical relationships.
